1. Context¶
In biological organisms, autobiographical identity exhibits a remarkable property: the self continuously assimilates new memories, knowledge, and behavioral adaptations over an 80+ year lifespan, yet remains recognizably the same cohesive individual. This architectural decision establishes the formal control-theoretic and mathematical framework governing lifelong identity trajectories in Spector.
Biological Analog & Neurocognitive Foundations¶
In the human brain, identity stability is governed by deep subcortical and insular-prefrontal homeostatic feedback loops:
-
Allostatic Setpoint Attraction (Insular & vmPFC Network): The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and anterior insular cortex maintain stable, low-dimensional attractor states representing self-relevance and affective baselines (Damasio's Proto-Self and Core-Self).
-
Slow-Scale Epigenetic & Synaptic Grounding: While hippocampal and cortical synapses undergo high-plasticity daily remodeling, core autobiographical attractor networks are anchored by perineuronal nets (PNNs) and structural protein lattices that enforce an infinitesimal restoring bias toward foundational schemas.
-
Consolidation Re-anchoring: During Slow-Wave Sleep (SWS) and sharp-wave ripple (SWR) replay, downscaling is not purely relative; it is constrained by homeostatic reference signals that prevent synaptic weight explosion or divergence.
2. Problem Statement¶
In biological organisms, autobiographical identity exhibits a remarkable property: the self continuously assimilates new memories, knowledge, and behavioral adaptations over an 80+ year lifespan, yet remains recognizably the same cohesive individual.
In computational active inference architectures (such as Spector's AISME), identity is formalized through a generative self-model \(\boldsymbol{p}_t = \mathcal{N}(\boldsymbol{\mu}_t, \boldsymbol{\Sigma}_t)\) operating over a Riemannian cognitive manifold \(\mathcal{M}\) endowed with metric tensor \(G(\boldsymbol{s})\). During sleep reflection (ReflectPathway), synaptic plasticity adapts the generative prior mean \(\boldsymbol{\mu}_t\) toward the experiential memory centroid \(\boldsymbol{c}_t\):
The Divergence Theorem (Unconstrained Drift)¶
Let each day's experiential centroid \(\boldsymbol{c}_t = \boldsymbol{\mu}_t + \boldsymbol{\epsilon}_t\), where \(\boldsymbol{\epsilon}_t \sim \mathcal{N}(0, \sigma_{\text{exp}}^2 I)\). Over \(T\) epochs (days/years), the variance of the generative prior expands linearly:
For \(T = 36,500\) (100 years), \(\lim_{T \to \infty} \|\boldsymbol{\mu}_T - \boldsymbol{\mu}_0\| \to \infty\). The system experiences unbounded diffusion across \(\mathcal{M}\), completely escaping the initial identity basin within 5–10 virtual years.
3. Decision Drivers¶
- Lifelong Personality Coherence: Prevent catastrophic personality drift or psychological divergence across decades of continuous active inference.
- Bounded Adaptive Plasticity: Allow agents and cognitive personas to learn new facts, evolve habits, and adjust tone without erasing foundational constitutional traits.
- Formal Stability Guarantees: Prove mathematically that the identity trajectory remains within a compact, stable attractor basin under arbitrary environmental perturbations.
- Measurable Continuity: Provide explicit metrics to track and audit identity divergence over time.
4. Considered Options¶
Option 1: Static Frozen Personality Model¶
- Hardcode persona weights and priors permanently, disabling parameter updates.
- Verdict: Rejected. Eliminates adaptive personalization, experiential learning, and conversational rapport.
Option 2: Unconstrained Online Plasticity¶
- Allow unrestricted continuous SGD / Hebbian updates across all identity dimensions.
- Verdict: Rejected. Inevitably suffers from the Divergence Theorem, where unbounded perturbations cause the agent to wander arbitrarily far from its baseline character.
Option 3: Soft Identity Anchor Control Law with Lyapunov Stability (Selected)¶
- Introduce a restoring control force parameterized by core identity anchors and adaptive elasticity.
- Mathematically guarantee asymptotic stability via Lyapunov function analysis.
- Verdict: Accepted. Balances plastic adaptation with rigorous identity homeostasis.
5. Decision Outcome¶
Mathematical Formulation & Control Dynamics¶
3.1 The 4-Component Identity State Vector¶
Let the full cognitive state of an agent at epoch \(t\) be represented by: $\(\boldsymbol{s}_t = \bigl(\boldsymbol{q}_t, \boldsymbol{m}_t, \boldsymbol{p}_t, \boldsymbol{n}_t\bigr) \in \mathcal{S}\)$ where:
- \(\boldsymbol{q}_t \in \mathbb{R}^d\): Expectation mean of
MentalStatePosterior - \(\boldsymbol{m}_t \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times d}\): Tangent space centroid of
PersonalMetricTensor\(G(\boldsymbol{s})\) - \(\boldsymbol{p}_t \in \mathbb{R}^d\): Generative self-model prior mean
- \(\boldsymbol{n}_t \in \mathbb{R}^d\): Autobiographical narrative self summary embedding
3.2 Core Identity Anchor \(s_{\text{core}}\)¶
At time \(t=0\), we record the immutable core anchor: $\(\boldsymbol{s}_{\text{core}} = \bigl(\boldsymbol{q}_0, \boldsymbol{m}_0, \boldsymbol{p}_0, \boldsymbol{n}_0\bigr)\)$
3.3 The Soft Identity Anchor Control Law¶
During sleep reflection in ReflectPathway, the prior mean is updated via a two-stage consolidation operator:
Expanding into a single recurrence relation: $\(\boldsymbol{p}_{t+1} = (1 - \eta_{\text{anchor}})(1 - \eta_{\text{exp}})\boldsymbol{p}_t + (1 - \eta_{\text{anchor}})\eta_{\text{exp}}\boldsymbol{c}_t + \eta_{\text{anchor}}\boldsymbol{p}_{\text{core}}\)$
3.4 Lyapunov Stability Proof¶
Define the Lyapunov candidate function \(V(\boldsymbol{p}_t)\) as the squared Riemannian distance to the core anchor: $\(V(\boldsymbol{p}_t) = \frac{1}{2} (\boldsymbol{p}_t - \boldsymbol{p}_{\text{core}})^T G(\boldsymbol{s}) (\boldsymbol{p}_t - \boldsymbol{p}_{\text{core}})\)$
Taking the expected change \(\Delta V(\boldsymbol{p}_t) = \mathbb{E}[V(\boldsymbol{p}_{t+1}) - V(\boldsymbol{p}_t)]\): $\(\Delta V(\boldsymbol{p}_t) \le -\eta_{\text{anchor}} V(\boldsymbol{p}_t) + \frac{1}{2}\eta_{\text{exp}}^2 \text{Tr}(G \boldsymbol{\Sigma}_{\text{exp}})\)$
For \(V(\boldsymbol{p}_t) > \frac{\eta_{\text{exp}}^2 \text{Tr}(G \boldsymbol{\Sigma}_{\text{exp}})}{2 \eta_{\text{anchor}}}\), \(\Delta V(\boldsymbol{p}_t) < 0\).
Therefore, the dynamical system is Globally Uniformly Bounded in the sense of Lyapunov. The identity state is asymptotically trapped in a compact invariant attractor sphere of radius:
With \(\eta_{\text{anchor}} = 10^{-4}\) and \(\eta_{\text{exp}} = 5 \times 10^{-3}\), \(R_{\text{attractor}} < 0.12\), guaranteeing complete bounded stability for arbitrary horizons \(t \to \infty\).
Longitudinal Continuity Metric¶
The continuity coefficient \(C(t, t+\Delta) \in [0, 1]\) is computed as:
where:
- \(d_M(\boldsymbol{s}_a, \boldsymbol{s}_b) = \sqrt{(\boldsymbol{p}_a - \boldsymbol{p}_b)^T G(\boldsymbol{s})(\boldsymbol{p}_a - \boldsymbol{p}_b)}\)
- \(\lambda = 1.0\) (decay sensitivity)
System Target: Across 10,000 sleep reflection epochs (simulating 50+ virtual years), the system maintains: $\(C(0, 10000) \ge 0.90\)$
6. Pros and Cons of the Options¶
Positive¶
- Proven Mathematical Safety: Lyapunov proof guarantees that trajectory deviations decay exponentially to bounded equilibria.
- Graceful Adaptation: Agents adapt to local conversational nuances while preserving their authentic soul identity.
- Observability: Continuity scores provide automated telemetry for monitoring persona degradation or drift.
Negative / Trade-offs¶
- Restoring Torque Tuning: Requires careful tuning of restoring coefficients (\(\lambda\)) to balance agility against stiffness.
- State Vector Overhead: Tracking identity trajectory snapshots adds minor computational overhead during reflective consolidation cycles.
